Former President Barack Obama is to be the first guest on David Letterman’s new monthly Netflix talk show, the streaming network announced Friday. It will be one of Mr. Obama’s only interviews since he left office. (In the fall, he recorded an interview with Prince Harry for BBC Radio 4.)

The show — titled “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman” — is to begin Jan. 12. It will also mark a return to prominence for Mr. Letterman, who last hosted “Late Show With David Letterman,” which ended in 2015.

“I had a show for a long time. Then I didn’t have a show for a long time, and I can’t tell you how great it is to be out of the damn house. Wow,” Mr. Letterman announced in a trailer.

“You never know when you might learn something,” Mr. Letterman added. “And that’s what this is about for me. These are people that I admire.”

The announced guests for the six-episode show will certainly garner interest. Among them: George Clooney, Malala Yousafzai, Jay-Z, Tina Fey and Howard Stern.

Mr. Letterman hasn’t been totally out of the spotlight. He has given interviews and popped up on occasional podcasts (such as one with Norm MacDonald). He was also awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor last year, a prestigious honor in comedy.

Correction: January 5, 2018

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of the last show hosted by David Letterman. It was “Late Show With David Letterman,” not “Late Night With David Letterman.”
