It might be cold and miserable outside in New York and New Jersey right now, but the good news is that spring training is right around the corner.
If you're looking to fly south for winter to watch the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Florida, here are some key dates to know:
Feb. 12 - Pitchers and catchers report
Feb. 13 - Partial workout and physicals
Feb. 13 - First full workout with pitchers and catchers.
Feb. 17 - Position players report
Feb. 18 - Partial workout and physicals for position players
Feb. 19 - First full-squad workout
Feb. 23 - First Data Field Grapefruit League against the Atlanta Braves
March 7 - Spring Subway Series game at First Data Field
So, now for the bad news. The hot stove is just as cold as the weather and while the Mets will still need to make a few more moves, they won't be the team igniting the flame. They have a few key needs but don't believe it necessary to spend on big money free agents. The few prospects they have at higher levels they would like to keep, especially since they may need guys like infielder Luis Guillorme or right-hander Corey Oswalt for depth.
It's been a quiet offseason for the Mets so far, but it's been relatively quiet for the rest of baseball as well. There are plenty of free agents still available and the Mets are hoping that the longer they wait on the market, the cheaper they'll become.
What could be next in the offseason? Watch the video above to find out.
