Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho made Luke Shaw promise him two things in hotel talks

MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho reportedly made Luke Shaw promise him two things in showdown talks at the team’s hotel.

Shaw has found life at Manchester United difficult ever since Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in the summer of 2016.

However, despite talk remaining that the Red Devils will try to sign Danny Rose from Tottenham, Shaw appears to have won Mourinho round.

The former Southampton star has made the left-back slot his own in recent weeks, being picked ahead of both Ashley Young and Daley Blind.

And the Mirror say his resurgence came after a face-to-face meeting with Mourinho at the team’s hotel.

It is said Mourinho wanted two guarantees from Shaw in order to reinstate him to the Manchester United team.

First, he wanted an assurance the 22-year-old was fit enough to make the cut.

Shaw has struggled ever since a serious leg break sustained in a Champions League clash against PSV Eindhoven in September 2015.

Even before that, Van Gaal was regularly critical of the defender and his body shape.

And the Mirror say Mourinho also wanted a guarantee that Shaw could be called upon when required.

The player’s attitude has also been called into question by both Mourinho and Van Gaal.

Some figures at Old Trafford felt he lacked the backbone to sustain criticism and rise above it.

At one point during Van Gaal’s reign, senior players were forced to tell the Dutchman to lay off the young defender.

Should Shaw fail to prove his worth to Mourinho going forward, however, then United may opt to strengthen in his position.

Celtic’s Kieran Tierney, Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon and Juventus’ Alex Sandro have all been linked with moves to the Premier League giants.
