Septuagenarian jumps to death before Metro train

Fed up of facing family problems, a 74-year-old man allegedly jumped in front of a running metro train and ended his life on Thursday afternoon at GTB Nagar metro station. A suicide note was recovered from the elderly man in which he had stated that family issues were responsible for his drastic step. Metro services were shortly interrupted.

DCP Metro Pankaj Kumar Singh said that the incident was reported at around 2 pm when Banarasi Das was standing on the platform. He jumped in front of a train heading towards Vishwavidyalaya.

Banarsi Das, a resident of Acharya Kripalani Road in Adarsh Nagar, suddenly jumped in front of a metro train from the platform number one of the metro station on the yellow line.

“Soon as the matter was reported, a CISF team along with the DMRC staff was rushed to the spot. The man had got his right leg amputated in the incident. He was pulled out and was rushed to Babu Jagjivan Ram Hospital in an ambulance. Metro movement remained interrupted at platform number one from 2.40 pm to 2.58 pm because of this,” said a CISF officer.

The officer said, later it was learnt that he was declared dead at the hospital. “A suicide note was also found, in which the man had stated his family problems as a reason for his suicide. Delhi Metro Rail Protection also arrived at the spot to inquire into the matter and is heading investigations further,” added the officer.
