Top Trump donor Rebekah Mercer said she no longer supports former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon while reiterating her support for the president amid a feud between the two over a tell-all book.

"I support President Trump and the platform upon which he was elected," Mercer said in a statement, according to the Washington Post. "My family and I have not communicated with Steve Bannon in many months and have provided no financial support to his political agenda, nor do we support his recent actions and statements."

A report emerged Wednesday that Mercer, who is Bannon’s primary donor, had cut ties with Bannon after he reportedly said he would rely on the Mercers’ financial backing if he ever ran for president.

Mercer was also irritated by Bannon’s role in the Alabama special election last month, where Bannon was vocal about his support for GOP Senate candidate Roy Moore. Furthermore, she was put off by some of his comments in the media because they appeared to incite pointless controversy, the Post reported.

After leaving the White House in July 2017, Bannon returned to his previous post as executive chairman of Breitbart News.

Mercer, who holds a minority stake at Breitbart, said she remains supportive of the outlet. Those close to the news outlet say talks are emerging about possibly removing Bannon from his position as executive chairman.

Mercer’s statement comes after the White House distanced itself from Bannon on Wednesday, following the publication of excerpts Wednesday from a forthcoming book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House," by Michael Wolff. The excerpts featured unflattering comments from Bannon about Trump’s family.

"Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency. When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind," Trump said in a statement on Wednesday.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders pushed back on some the allegations made in the book and called it “trashy tabloid fiction” on Wednesday. Sanders also said Thursday that Breitbart should “consider” severing ties with Bannon.
