Job Description
The European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) is one of the highest ranked scientific research organisations in the world. The Headquarters Laboratory is located in Heidelberg (Germany), with additional sites in Barcelona (Spain), Grenoble (France), Hamburg (Germany), Hinxton near Cambridge (UK), Rome (Italy).
The Bork Group and Zeller Team are seeking a project manager to coordinate joint activities between several research groups at EMBL, the German Cancer Research Center DKFZ and Heidelberg University towards bioinformatics service provision in an inter-institutional centre called HD-HuB. HD-HuB is committed to establishing a high-quality service platform in human bioinformatics which comprises software tools, analysis pipelines, cloud infrastructures and training courses on general and application-specific bioinformatics skills. HD-HuB is part of the German network for bioinformatics infrastructure (de.NBI) and the European ELIXIR network.
The postholder will:
- establish personal interactions with scientists and bioinformaticians from EMBL research groups (Bork, Zeller, Huber, Korbel) and HD-HuB partners from DKFZ and HD University and coordinate local activities with scientific and administrative personnel from the de.NBI and ELIXIR networks;
- support the management of HD-HuB with planning, reporting, outreach and communication activities;
- proactively coordinate with various stakeholders (consortium partners, de.NBI administration, funding bodies) and execute his/her tasks in a careful, independent and forward-looking manner;
- help to maintain shared project documentation and support (also financial) grant reporting;
- plan and organize training courses, workshops and other events;
- contribute to content maintenance of the HD-HuB web portal;
- actively take part in initiatives seeking to acquire funding for sustained bioinformatics service provision.
This position is ideally suited for an applicant who:
- likes to make a distinct contribution to planning and execution of cutting edge bioinformatics projects by written, visual and verbal communication and coordination of activities across research groups and institutions;
- thinks strategically while steering day-to-day activities towards the common goal of providing world-class bioinformatics service;
- enjoys networking with researchers from various areas within computational biology;
- is looking for a part-time position with diverse responsibilities in a young dynamic team immersed in EMBL’s collaborative, interdisciplinary, and culturally diverse research environment.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential qualifications:
- MSc in computational biology, bioinformatics, computer science, biology or a related field. Further research experience (e.g. PhD) is considered a plus;
- excellent interpersonal and communication skills as well as proficiency in English and German (both written and verbal);
- effective organizational, multi-tasking and time-management skills with prior experience in organizing courses, workshops or conferences and/or in managing larger collaborative research projects (or similar);
- experience in grant writing and reporting (including budgeting aspects);
- strong working knowledge of MS Office.
Optional qualifications:
- formal qualifications and/or work experience in scientific project management are considered a strong advantage;
- experience with content management systems and/or basic web development skills
- visual communication skills.
