Britain OUTRAGED at latte levy: ‘Stick coffee cup tax up your a***!’

COFFEE drinkers have hit out at plans by MPs to introduce a 25p ‘latte levy’ on throwaway cups.

Latte levy GETTY

The latte levy has caused outrage

Angry Twitter users took to social media to ask why consumers were being hit in the pocket once again in a bid to raise £438million.

The committee is calling on the Government to introduce the charge on disposable cups on top of the price of a coffee, with the money raised used to improve the UK's reprocessing facilities and “binfrastructure” to ensure cups and other food and drink packaging is recycled.

But fans of hot drinks blasted the move, saying: “Stick your coffee cup levy up your a***.

“Always the cash-strapped man in the street who gets hit. Perhaps if the govt taxed companies correctly they could fund things properly.”

Coffee GETTY

Another said: “Here we go… Coffee Cup Tax. The government's ingenuity of solving problems always amazes me,or is that making more money.

“Greedy Britain must be the richest in the world.”

One added: “The coffee cup tax is just another sneaky way of taxing people more while reducing public sector workers wages. No wonder poverty in the UK is on the increase. #smh #coffeecuptax.”

Others called for the coffee cup manufacturers to make biodegradable cups instead.

One said: “Surely these huge manufacturers could find a solution. You’re not telling me as a civilisation we are capable of exploring the far reaches of our solar system but can’t manufacture a recyclable coffee cup!”

While looking like paper, the cups actually have a polypropylene plastic lining.

And although in theory, both the paper and the lining are recyclable, conventional pepper plants refuse them because the lining clogs their mills.

The committee heard less than one per cent of coffee cups are recycled because there are only three facilities in the UK that can split the paper and plastic components.

In a bid to encourage consumers to bring in their own reusable cups, some shops give money off the price of a hot drink for customers, such as Pret A Manger, which has just doubled its discount to 50p.

Meanwhile, other Twitter users complained of the rising costs in shops, where we are now charged 5p to use a plastic bag.

One said: “I’m carrying a #bagforlife now I've got to carry around #coffee cup for life.. What next... Gonna have to have racksac at all times…”

Another said: “Miserabilist Bureaucratic Britain is at it again......Ban Sugar, Ban Diesel Cars, Ban Smoking, Ban Opinions, Tax Shopping Bags, 20mph Speed Limits, & today.....Tax your Coffee Cup. Isn't it time to get the State out of your Life?”

The UK throws away 2.5 billion disposable coffee cups every year. Almost all of them are incinerated, exported or sent to landfill because their plastic lining makes them costly to recycle.
