Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made it his personal New Year's resolution to work on “fixing” Facebook to avoid issues like violent content and interference by nation states.
“The world feels anxious and divided, and Facebook has a lot of work to do,” Zuckerberg wrote on his personal page. “Whether it's protecting our community from abuse and hate, defending against interference by nation states, or making sure that time spent on Facebook is time well spent.”
Zuckerberg decided to tackle this larger issue this year after taking on personal challenges in previous years such as learning Mandarin Chinese and visiting every state in the United States.
“These issues touch on questions of history, civics, political philosophy, media, government, and of course technology. I'm looking forward to bringing groups of experts together to discuss and help work through these topics,” he wrote.
Social media platforms have fallen under scrutiny recently with issues such as fake news, Russian meddling in U.S. elections, and hate groups using the platforms to spread their messages.
In October, Facebook turned over 3,000 ads connected to the Kremlin to Congress as part of the investigation into the role Russian interference played in the 2016 presidential election.
