Gianfranco Zola 'disappointed' with Morata's lack of ruthlessness after Arsenal shocker

CHELSEA legend Gianfranco Zola admitted he is “disappointed” with record signing Alvaro Morata’s finishing after the Spaniard’s performance against Arsenal.

Former Real Madrid man Morata missed a trio of gilt-edged chances as the Blues finished with just a point from their trip to the Emirates Stadium last night.

Speaking to talkSPORT’s Sport Breakfast earlier today, the iconic Blues striker said: “It’s very difficult to be too hard on him because his work rate is really good.

“Even yesterday, he really is a player who works for the team.

“But, to be honest, yesterday I was a little bit disappointed.

Gianfranco Zola criticised Alvaro Morata's ruthlessness in front of goal

“Morata, in my opinion, has the quality to be a really top, top player, but when you see him miss those goals, especially the one in the first half, you expect him to be a little bit cooler in front of the goalkeeper.

“He needs to be a bit more ruthless.

“He’s a player of amazing qualities, but one of the things I had some doubts about when he came to Chelsea was whether he was tough and ruthless enough.”

The 25-year-old arrived at Stamford Bridge in a whopping £60m deal from Madrid in the summer and started brightly, scoring 10 goals in 19 Premier League games.

But fans too have been disappointed by his lack of cutting edge in front of goal recently.

“His stats are padded by his hat-trick [against Stoke] and he hasn't been incredible for us so far,” wrote one fan.

“That being said, he clearly has a lot of potential because he manages to get into all of these positions so regularly and that's what we've been missing since Drogba left.”

Another wrote: “His shocking miss vs Atletico cost us the match when we should have won and topped the group that day. Missed a few chances vs West Ham as well.

“This isn't the first time.”
