Qualifying continues for March 24 election

Another candidate for Lafourche Parish district attorney has signed up for the March 24 election.

Thibodaux City Court prosecutor Brad Naquin qualified Wednesday for the seat.

Qualifying runs through Friday for the election, which will also include a Lafourche Parish School Board seat.

Terrebonne Parish will have nothing on the ballot. There will also be no statewide or national races.

Former District Attorney Cam Morvant II, citing health concerns, stepped down in November after nearly 15 years. Interim District Attorney Kristine Russell qualified Wednesday for the office.

Three candidates signed up Wednesday for the District 8 seat on the School Board: Chris Lagarde, Raymond Toups and Barry Uzee. Toups is serving in the interim.

Former board member Ronald Pere resigned in May, saying he and his wife were moving to an assisted-living facility outside the Raceland-area district. He had been on the board for 10 years.

Candidates are signing up from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Clerk of Court's Office, 303 W. Third St., Thibodaux.

In races with three or more candidates, if no one receives more than half the vote March 24, the top two will compete in an April 28 runoff.

Residents must register by Feb. 21 in person or by mail, or by March 3 at geauxvote.com, to vote in the March 24 election. Early voting runs from March 10-17.
