Uttarakhand is now reeling under a chilling cold as the mercury in Dehradun plummeted to 5 degree Celsius and the upper reaches of the hills experienced snow and rain on Thursday. The meteorological centre says that the temperature is likely to dip further in the coming few days in the city as elsewhere in the state while fog would engulf the plain districts.
Besides, many of the places in the hills would experience ground frost for some days. Things were frozen at high altitude Matela in Almora district where the mercury hovered around -3.6°C.
Dehradun saw a windy day on Thursday. The wind blowing from the frozen Himalayas is contributing to the biting cold, something which is making the people keep indoors as far as possible. The usually bustling roads in the city were found deserted soon after the evening settled. The markets presented the same picture with many trader having downed shutters after evening came.
The State Meteorological Centre director Bikram Singh said that western disturbances might spawn light rain/snow at some places, especially in the higher reaches of Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Pithoragarh districts while the climate would remain mainly dry in the rest of Uttarakhand on Friday. Besides, places in the plains, especially in Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts, would see dense fog during the next 72 hours.
Singh said that the weather forecast for Dehradun on Friday is mainly clear to partly cloudy sky.
The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 21 degree Celsius and 5 degree Celsius respectively here
