Weekend FIVE: 5 events for the first weekend of January

It is Sam Rayburn’s birthday weekend and the Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site would like area residents to get involved with the celebration. If you are looking for other weekend events in North Texas, after a short trip down Highway 75 some weekend fun may be found. Most events will be taking place in the Metroplex so here are five family-friendly events for this weekend.


1. Mr. Sam’s party


Sam Rayburn would be turning 136 on Saturday. He was born Jan. 6, 1882. The Sam Rayburn House State Historic Site will have its annual birthday party for Mr. Sam from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be guided tours, Mr. Sam’s favorite chili and cake to honor the occasion. Sam Rayburn House is located at 890 State Highway 56 in Bonham.


2. NCAA Champions


For college football fans, the 2018 FCS Championship will be held at Toyota Stadium in Frisco this year. James Madison University and North Dakota State University will be playing at 11 a.m. Saturday. Official tickets can be purchased on the NCAA’s website fcs.flashseats.com. JMU will be hosting an official Friday night pep rally at 7:30 p.m. at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco.


3. Christmas season isn’t over yet


Holiday celebrations are not over just yet. Six Flags Over Texas is still doing its “Holiday in the Park” event. It is open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. until Sunday. There are twinkling lights, a Santa’s workshop and an opportunity to decorate holiday cookies. Santa, Mrs. Claus and the elves will be on site. Tickets start at $64. The park is located at 2201 Road to Six Flags in Arlington.


4. All aboard the train


Benefiting the Ronald McDonald House in Dallas, the Trains at North Park is in its 30th year with about 750 miniature rail cars. Tickets start at $4. The exhibit will be open until Sunday. The mall is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. this weekend at 8687 N. Central Expressway in Dallas.


5. Prehistoric park


The Heard Natural Science Museum in McKinney recently opened a new exhibit that science lovers of all ages may enjoy. Dinosaurs Live! with life sized animatronic dinosaurs will be on display until Feb. 18. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ticket information can be found on the museum’s website heardmuseum.org. The museum is located at 1 Nature Pl., McKinney.
