Vermont Gov. Phil Scott is calling for "continued fiscal discipline" to help ensure state residents are able to keep more of the money they make.

Speaking Thursday during his state-of-the-state speech to the Legislature in Montpelier, Scott, a Republican, said the state must restore its economic and fiscal foundation.

He says many of the state's businesses are looking to hire hundreds of workers, but there aren't enough qualified workers to fill them.

He called on lawmakers to work with him to attract more workers. One proposal to help that become reality is to offer tuition-free college for people who serve in the Vermont National Guard.
