Douglas Goss, a master plumber at The Plumber Company, shared several tips for people dealing with or worrying about frozen pipes.
To prevent freezing pipes, homeowners can shut off the water supplies, then open the faucets to drain all water out of the pipes. If people have warming or heat tape, available at most hardware stores, they can apply that product to pipes in drafty areas.
Keeping the heat set at a high temperature is another good practice, said David Lund, a plumber for F.G. Lees & Son Inc. in Providence.
“People put the heat down in the evening to save money, but it’s a bad idea,” Lund said, noting that a slight breeze can freeze an exposed pipe.
If a pipe is frozen, residents should call a plumber, who has equipment that can find and fix frozen spots and leaks, Goss said.
