A Medford man who broke a massage tool while beating his former girlfriend will serve more than 7½ years in prison.
Shadow Omallah Iles, 36, was sentenced Thursday in Jackson County Circuit Court to 94 months in prison for brutally attacking the mother of his son in their bedroom last summer, according to a release issued by the Jackson County District Attorney's office.
At 8:10 a.m. July 20, Medford police found the victim bleeding from the head and nearly unconscious on her bedroom floor. Nearby on the floor were two wooden pieces of a ma roller, a massage tool that looks similar to a rolling pin.
The victim's son witnessed portions of the brutal attack, police said.
Prior to the attack, Iles and the victim had recently returned from a trip to the Oregon Coast, where Iles spent time with his child, according to Deputy District Attorney Lucy Durst. Though Iles had stayed the night after the trip, he and the victim were no longer in a relationship.
"It wasn't a joint residence," Durst said.
The victim suffered injuries to her hands during the attack while trying to protect her head, including a broken finger and lost fingernail, according to Durst.
Iles called 911 after the attack, hung up and answered the phone on callback, according to Durst. Iles was at the scene when police arrived.
The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was treated for injuries to her scalp, face, hands and neck.
She told police that Iles struck her continuously with the roller and stated, "I'm going to bludgeon you to death," according to the release. After several blows with the roller, Iles reportedly strangled the woman until she lost consciousness. The attack left large amounts of blood on the bedroom carpet and spatters on the wall.
Iles pleaded no contest to felony counts of second-degree assault and strangulation Dec. 15. A no-contest plea has the same legal consequences as a guilty plea.
Assault in the second degree carries a mandatory minimum 70-month sentence under Oregon's Measure 11 mandatory-minimum sentencing law. Circuit Court Judge Lorenzo Mejia sentenced Iles to an additional 24 months on the strangulation conviction.
