ROCKFORD — The Kmart store on Sandy Hollow Road will close by early April, part of the latest round of cuts for Sears Holdings Corp.
The department store operator made its announcement Thursday, alerting associates at more than 100 Kmart and Sears stores across the nation.
Six stores will close in Illinois: Kmarts in Rockford, West Frankfort and Mount Vernon, as well as Sears stores in Orland Park, Bourbonnais and Marion. All are closing by early April.
A total of 64 Kmarts and 39 Sears were targeted in this latest round of closings. Sears Holdings officials said in a news release that the least profitable stores are closing.
“Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size,” the news release said. “In the process, as previously announced we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.”
