England ended Day 1 on 233/5 as two late wickets for Australia brought them back in the match. Joe Root’s England cricket team handed 20-year-old leg spinner Mason Crane his debut in the final Ashes Test in Sydney. The start of the day’s play got delayed due to rain washing out the entire first session. Pat Cummins struck twice when the match finally began to remove Mark Stoneman and James Vince. Alastair Cook made a promising start but the ex-skipper whose heroics at Melbourne almost gave England a win was dismissed by Josh Hazlewood. Skipper Joe Root and Dawid Malan batted well to steady the ship in the final session before Root was removed by Mitchell Starc and Jonny Bairstow was dismissed by Hazlewood.
