The couple tied the nuptial knot on 31 December 2017. Vinodhini and her husband, Venkatesh, who are currently residing in Tokyo, hail from Madurai and they made all arrangements for the couple to get married. Parents of Chiharu, brothers, and sister in law of Yuto were also present during the wedding ceremony. From exchanging the vows in Tamil to taking the ‘sathapathi’ (seven rounds) around the fire, the wedding was done in the traditional way.  This is not all, they also had their wedding cards printed in Tamil. “Many people in Japan desist from marrying the traditional way. Some get married in a church but we decided to do it here. Both sides of the family barely needed any convincing. I’m really happy today,” Obata told The Hindu. Check out the video of their wedding:

“I feel bit nervous and had not been to such rituals. But my wife has been here and participated in all family functions and events in Tamil Nadu,” Yuto told Times of India. When asked about his wedding attire he stated: “I have seen such attires in Tamil movies where actors Dhanush and Vijay wearing them. I am getting used to Tamil culture and things”.

Chiharu, who works as a software professional in an aviation company at Tokyo, decided to do a research in linguistics as she thought Tamil was very close to the Japanese language. She started her research to find the connection between the two back in 2013. She came to Tamil Nadu and learned Tamil as well. Chiharu’s father revealed that he was very excited for the wedding in Tamil style. “We are very happy to be in Madurai. We liked all the rituals and food as well”, he said.
