HQ Trivia is not messing around when it comes to its competition.

The trivia app filed a trademark complaint with Google against competing app The Q. That resulted in The Q's Android app being removed from the Google Play Store Wednesday, according to The Q's founder.

The Q, which launched last month, is a live trivia show with a format very similar to HQ. Viewers answer questions read by a host for a chance to win a chunk of a cash prize (though The Q's pots tend to be far smaller than HQ's).

Started by Yik Yak cofounder Will Jamieson, the app hasn't gained nearly the popularity of HQ, despite its similar format. One trait that, until recently, set The Q apart was that it launched with both an iPhone and an Android app. 

But even though HQ's Android app has only been out a matter of days, the company has already succeeded in getting The Q booted out of Google Play, according to Jamieson. He says he received a takedown notice from Google Wednesday, notifying him of the trademark complaint from a firm representing HQ.

"It was because we had the letter Q in our name," he wrote in an email. “Instead of competing in the market where gameshows have been around since the invention of TV, it’s unfortunate our competitors are relying on dirty tactics and desperate behavior.”

Oddly, there's at least one other app still in the Play Store that also looks like it's trying to capitalize on HQ's popularity. An app called HQ Trivia - Live Trivia Guide and Tips, which uses an app icon very similar to HQ's logo, remains available for download.
