BMW Group Delivers Best Sales Performance in India till date with 9800 Cars Delivered to Customers and Remarkable Annual Growth of 25 percent


BMW Motorrad debuts in India with sales of 252 motorcycles within nine months of launch

BMW Group has delivered its finest performance in India till date in calendar year 2017 with all three brands – BMW, MINI and Motorrad.

BMW Group India delivered 9800 cars (BMW + MINI) in 2017, registering a growth of 25% as compared to 2016. BMW India sold 9379 cars in 2017, clocking a notable growth of 25% as compared to 2016. MINI is leading the small-premium car segment in India with 421 MINIs hitting the road in 2017, a growth of 17% as compared to 2016.

In the first year of its operations in the country, BMW Motorrad has created a strong appeal among Indian customers, delivering 252 motorcycles.

Mr. Vikram Pawah, President – BMW Group India, said, “2017 was a challenging year for the automotive industry in India that adversely affected stability and impacted consumer confidence due to several policy fluctuations. BMW Group India has achieved this successful growth as a result of its robust strategy, a resolute approach in its implementation and absolute commitment to all customers and their needs. We have created a differentiating factor in the Indian luxury car market with the strength of our brands, products and innovative customer initiatives.”

In 2017, the BMW sales growth was predominantly driven by the Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) segment, particularly the BMW X1 (compact SAV) and the BMW X5 (premium SAV). The second half of 2017 also saw an unprecedented acceleration in sales with the launch of the all-new BMW 5 Series, the most progressive sport-business sedan in India.

Mr. Pawah further added, “We are moving forward with a clear aim and our resolute strategy of ‘Power to Lead’. We are well-prepared to set a benchmark in the Indian automobile industry in every aspect, with passion, performance and excellence. We are confident of continuing this momentum but our primary goal is to grow the size of the luxury car market in India. We strongly believe, that leading the growth of the segment is more important than anything, even more important than being just Number One.”

With BMW, MINI and Motorrad, the BMW Group has its sight set firmly on the premium sector of the Indian automobile market. Along with automobiles and motorcycles, the BMW Group's activities in India comprise of financial services for its premium clientele.

Headquartered in Gurgaon (National Capital Region), BMW India is a 100% subsidiary of the BMW Group. Till date, BMW Group invested over INR 5.2 billion (€ 72 million) in BMW India. The wide range of BMW activities in India include a manufacturing plant in Chennai, a parts warehouse in Mumbai, a training centre in Gurgaon NCR and development of a dealer organisation across major metropolitan centres of the country. Currently, BMW India has 42 sales outlets in the Indian market. The total number of employees at BMW Group India is 650.

The BMW Plant Chennai locally produces the BMW 3 Series, the BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo, the BMW 5 Series, the BMW 7 Series, the BMW X1, the BMW X3 and the BMW X5. BMW Plant Chennai will start the local production of the BMW 6 Series Gran Turismo in 2018. BMW dealerships also display the BMW X6, the BMW Z4, the BMW M3 Sedan, the BMW M4 Coupe, the BMW M5 Sedan, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe, the BMW X5 M, the BMW X6 M and BMW i8 which are available in the country as Completely Built-up Units.

MINI has successfully established itself as a premium small car brand in India. Presently, the MINI model range in India includes the MINI 3-door, MINI 5-door, MINI Convertible, MINI Countryman and the MINI Clubman. MINI has established five sales outlets in India.

BMW Motorrad officially started its operations as a part of the Indian subsidiary of BMW Group in 2017. Presently, BMW Motorrad is in the process of setting up the team and dealer network in India. Till date, BMW Motorrad India has set up seven sales outlets in India. BMW Motorrad dealerships display Sport – BMW S 1000 RR, BMW R 1200 RS; Adventure – BMW R 1200 GS, BMW R 1200 GS Adventure, BMW S 1000 XR; Roadster – BMW S 1000 R, BMW R 1200 R; Heritage – BMW R nineT, BMW R nineT Scrambler, BMW R nineT Racer and Tour – BMW R 1200 RT, BMW K 1600 GTL, BMW K 1600 B, which are available as Completely Built-up Units (CBU).

BMW Financial Services India is a 100% subsidiary of the BMW Group. Till date, BMW Group has invested INR 7.3 billion (€ 110.5 million) in BMW Financial Services India and operates with three business lines: Retail Finance, Commercial Finance and Insurance Solutions (as corporate agents). BMW Financial Services India also offers BMW Lease for individuals and corporate customers.
