Teenagers hospitalized after crash in eastern Sarasota County

Their vehicle drove off the road and overturned, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

SARASOTA COUNTY -- Two teenagers were hospitalized after their car ran off the road and overturned Wednesday night on State Road 72, the Florida Highway Patrol reports.

According to the FHP, Tyler Carter, 16, of Sarasota was driving a Nissan Altima east in the 12000 block of S.R. 72 at about 8:30 p.m. Tyler lost control and drove onto the shoulder, where the Nissan overturned and came to rest about 25 feet from the road.

Tyler, who was wearing a seat belt, was flown by trauma helicopter to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with serious injures. Passenger James P. Leddy, 16, of Sarasota, who was also wearing a seat belt, was taken to Doctors Hospital.

The crash is under investigation.
