Houma firefighters battled both extreme heat and freezing temperatures during an early morning structure fire in a local neighborhood, authorities said.

According to Houma Fire Chief Keith Ward, firefighters responded to a house fire at 5:50 a.m. in 900 block of Daspit Street. The house’s rear corner was engulfed in flames when units arrived, Ward said.

One occupant escaped the home without any injuries, and it took firefighters about 25 minutes to bring the fire under control, Ward said. Meanwhile, temperatures outside were about 20 degrees during the time of the blaze.

Although the cause of the fire remains under investigation, Ward said two space heaters may have been the culprit.
