A Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed that the police personnel deployed as drivers in the City Patrol Unit (CPU) squads do not possess required commercial driving licenses. The President of Dehradun City Bus Association Vijay Vardhan Dandariyal said that in response to the RTI query regarding CPU driver and pillion, the police department informed that the personnel ridding pillion on the CPU motorcycle carried non commercial license and provided the copy but it remained silent on the personnel driving these vehicles. He claimed that since the personnel driving the CPU motorcycle are drawing salary from the government exchequer he should have commercial license as per the law. He said that the guidelines of the driver service rules 2003 clearly mention that the drivers of government vehicles should carry commercial driving licenses. Dandariyal said that the transport department registers the motorcycles of those providing them on rent under commercial category. He said that the CPU sub inspector ridding pillion on the motorcycle and penalising the traffic offenders is actually ridding on a vehicle the driver of which is not holding valid license.
