New Girl could have ended with its Season 6 finale, which worked as a series finale but also set up the potential to continue the story with a time jump. But Fox was benevolent and allowed it to come back for an eight-episode final season, which premieres April 10, the network announced during its Television Critics Association winter press tour.

In the Season 6 finale, Jess (Zooey Deschanel) told Nick (Jake Johnson) about the feelings she still feels for him, culminating in a heart-tugging reunion kiss inside of an elevator. Also, Winston (Lamorne Morris) and Aly (Nasim Pedrad) got engaged, and Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) received news that they are expecting. When the series returns for its final season, a three-year time jump will have occurred. Jess and Nick are happily together and returning from a whirlwind European book tour; stay-at-home dad Schmidt and working mom Cece are raising their daughter, Ruth; and Winston and Aly are married, with a child on the way.
