KKL-JNF participated in the COP23 Climate Change Conference that took place in Bonn, Germany, on November 12th-17th, 2017.
During the conference KKL-JNF maintained a booth that presented the range of its activities, with the emphasis on climate change issues, and organized a side event with a panel of experts who discussed the consequences of climate change. KKL-JNF’s delegation to the conference included Gil Atzmon, Lower Galilee Director in KKL-JNF’s Northern Region, and Aviv Eisenbad, Director of the Forestry and Professional Development Department of KKL-JNF’s Afforestation Division.
The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) is designed to promote international cooperation to limit the rise in global temperatures and prevent climate change resulting from global warming. The convention was first signed in 1992, and it came into effect in 1994. Israel signed and ratified it in 1996.
The convention is an international means of dealing with the problem of global warming, which results from air pollution. The climate crisis and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are defined as two of the most serious problems confronting humanity.
Underlying the convention is concern over the gradual warming of the planet. Since 1860 temperatures on Earth have risen by an average of 0.3-0.6 degrees Celsius, and they are expected to rise by an additional 1-3.5 degrees by the end of 2100. This increase in temperature, which would appear to be produced by greenhouse gas emissions, generates extreme weather events, and it is liable, among other things, to cause a rise in sea levels, the disappearance of islands and flooding in low-lying areas, together with the spread of disease, famine and desertification.
The UN convention recognizes climate as a shared worldwide resource whose stability is directly influenced by industry and additional agents that cause the emission of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. The convention has defined an overall framework for an international effort designed to deal with the challenges presented by climate change in general, and by global warming in particular.
