SAN JOSE — A squirrel is being blamed for a widespread electrical outage at San Jose State University.

Power was knocked out to the main campus at about 10 a.m. Wednesday, spurring officials to cancel classes, send all non-essential staff home and close both the King Library and Student Union.

The power remained out as of 6 p.m.

The outage is also impacting the Campus Village residential towers, but they remain open to students.

“My understanding is that a squirrel was involved,” said SJSU spokeswoman Pat Harris about the cause of the outage.

Harris said she had not been provided any information about when the power would be restored.

The SJSU men’s basketball game against UNLV will take place at 8 p.m. as scheduled, said Harris, adding that generators were being brought in to power the Event Center.
