Maharashtra bandh: Trains delayed, buses vandalised in Thane

Thane: The crowded city wore the silent hood on Tuesday as the bandh called by Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh to condemn the death of a youth in Bhima Koregaon on January 1 disrupted normal life in the city.
The shops were closed and there was no transport available for the people. The movement of trains was stopped by demonstrators who blocked railway tracks at Thane station in the afternoon for some time. Many offices had arranged vehicles to pick and drop their employees but they were stopped at many places.
The traffic was normal till 11.00 am, but after that the protesters came in large number carrying flags and raising slogans forcing to put down the shutters of shops and disrupting the traffic. There were incidents where the TMT buses were vandalised and some incidents of stone pelting also were reported.

Section 144 was imposed in the city by the police banning the assembly of more than four people and police forces were deployed in many places. In Lokmanya Nagar , the protesters and they burnt the effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief minister Devendra Fadanvis.
Thane Municipal Transport Services Manager Sandeep Malvi said at least six buses were damaged by miscreants since last night in Check Naka, Wagle Estate, Cidco bus stop, Ambedkar Road areas. A large group of protesters blocked vehicular movement by placing a blockade at Mulund checkpost.
The bandh was peaceful in the powerloom town of Bhiwandi in neighbouring Palghar district. Educational institutes remained closed today in view of the bandh. A large deployment of police personnel ensured that the bandh passed off peacefully.
