Many residents are hunkered down as a blizzard-like storm generates near whiteout conditions around New Jersey.
The southern part of the state was hit first and trained National Weather Service spotters are reporting 9½ inches (24 centimeters) of snow in Mantoloking and Absecon. But the storm continues to push northward.
All state government offices are closed after Gov. Chris Christie reversed his earlier decision to delay opening. The Republican declared a state of emergency for Cape May, Atlantic, Ocean and Monmouth counties.
A blizzard warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. along the shore and for portions of central and southern New Jersey.
Forecasters say 8 to 12 inches (20 to 30 centimeters) of snow are possible with strong winds creating snow drifts.
