POLAR BLAST: Latest weather maps show Arctic winds set to plunge Britain into -10C freeze

BRITAIN is set to be hit by freezing polar winds just days after being lashed with 100mph winds by violent Storm Eleanor.

, ice and freezing temperatures could blanket the UK as early as tomorrow night as the Arctic systems move in.

Temperatures could drop as low as -10C in some parts of Britain with wintery conditions forecast over the weekend and into next week.

In the latest weather maps, the freezing polar winds can be seen sweeping across the north of Britain.

The high pressure will bring calmer but colder weather for the UK, and overnight temperatures could plummet to as low as -10C.

UK weather: Britain could be pelted by snow over the weekend

Parts of Scotland and northern England have been warned to at lower levels.

Met Office forecaster Emma Sharples said: “From Friday high pressure will build close to the UK allowing a northeasterly airflow with winds coming in from the Arctic region.

“There will be a lot of showers and with the cold air these will turn wintry over high ground, there is also a risk of snow to lower levels.

“Wintry showers could be quite widespread down the east coast this weekend and also across Scotland and northern coasts.

“It will feel much colder especially after milder air brought in of the Atlantic this week pushed temperatures up.”

Exacta Weather’s James Madden also warned that parts of the UK should brace for colder conditions.

“A severe cold and snowy spell awaits us and we expect this to take hold from Friday onwards,” he said.

“It is highly likely we will see some potentially crippling snowfall and this threatens to bring more chaos on the roads and to transport services.”

Bookmaker Coral currently has this month to be the coldest January on record in the UK at 6-4.

The Bookmaker has also cut the odds on London getting snow by the end of the weekend from 6-4 to 2-1.

Coral’s Harry Aitkenhead said: “There’s a real chance of a heavy snowfall over the first weekend of 2018."

The threat of snow comes just days after Storm Eleanor left a trail of destruction as it crashed into the UK on Tuesday evening and Wednesday day.

The storm brought winds of up to 100mph, torrential rain and caused chaos on the roads, leaving thousands of people were left without power.

The Met Office said gusts of 100mph were recorded at Great Dun Fell in Cumbria at 1am, while wind speeds reached 90mph at Orlock Head in Northern Ireland on Tuesday evening.
