The postal carrier accused of killing his supervisor and the postmaster of the Dublin post office nearly two weeks ago will be held without bail after making his first court appearance on Thursday.
DeShaune K. Stewart, 24, is charged with fatally shooting his supervisor, Lance Herrera-Dempsey, 52, at 4:25 a.m. Dec. 23 at the Dublin Post Office, Emerald Parkway, and killing Dublin postmaster Ginger Ballard, 53, outside of her Northwest Side apartment nearly three hours later by throwing her to the ground, crushing her skull. Police said Stewart was facing unspecified discipline.
Franklin County Municipal Court Judge David Tyack denied bail to Stewart at Thursday's hearing, granting a request by county Prosecutor Ron O'Brien. Stewart's defense attorney did not object.
The judge scheduled a preliminary hearing for Jan. 12. In the meantime, a decision will be made about whether Stewart will be prosecuted in state or federal court, O'Brien said.
The U.S. attorney's office in Columbus has filed charges against Stewart because the victims were federal employees.
