The vehicle was reported stolen in North Port.

SARASOTA -- Two teenagers are facing multiple felony charges after they stole a car and nearly hit law enforcement officers this week, the Sarasota Police Department reports.

According to a police news release, the North Port Police Department investigated a stolen vehicle and tracked it near South Lido Beach at about 6:45 a.m. Wednesday and requested assistance from Sarasota police.

Sarasota officers found the vehicle in the 1500 block of Benjamin Franklin Drive and attempted to stop it, but the vehicle drove off. Officers set up stop sticks in the northbound lanes of South Boulevard of the Presidents at Polk Drive before realizing that the vehicle was traveling north in the southbound lanes directly toward them. Officers threw the stop sticks at the vehicle's hood and leaned back against the patrol vehicle as the car passed them with about 2-3 feet of clearance.

The vehicle was stopped by stop sticks at North Washington Drive and John Ringling Boulevard.

The driver, Julien Guevara, 16, fled the scene and was arrested at his home Wednesday afternoon. He is charged with aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, fleeing to elude and vehicle theft.

The passenger, Haley Decker, 13, was arrested at the scene and charged with vehicle theft.

The Herald-Tribune is naming the teenagers because they are charged with felonies.

The two are facing additional charges from North Port Police.
