First lady Melania Trump, who was assured by President Trump that he would never win the election, was in tears on election night as the numbers tilted toward her husband, a new book on the president’s first year in office says.
“Melania was in tears—and not of joy,” Michael Wolff writes in “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.”
Wolff writes, in an excerpt published by New York Magazine on Wednesday, that the president did not enjoy his own inauguration because he was snubbed by celebrities and was “visibly fighting with his wife, who seemed on the verge of tears.”
The book also alleges the president and first lady sleep in separate bedrooms in the White House.
“The first time since the Kennedy White House that a presidential couple had maintained separate rooms,” the book reads.
The Trump marriage has faced ridicule from critics after the first lady and their young son, Barron, stayed in New York City for months following the president’s inauguration. The two moved to the White House once Barron completed his school year.
Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's spokeswoman, denied the report.
“The book is clearly going to be sold in the bargain fiction section. Mrs. Trump supported her husband's decision to run for President and in fact, encouraged him to do so. She was confident he would win and was very happy when he did," Grisham said in a statement.
