The iconic Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough
There is good news and bad coming out of the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough.

The bad first: the theatre is closing for two months.

The good: when it reopens, it will have had one tremendous refurbishment.

The foyer is to be given a complete make-over and a new environmentally friendly LED lighting system will be installed in the auditorium.

This is all part of the Transform Project, costing more than half a million pounds, the bulk of which is being funded by a grant from the Arts Council and the rest raised by public donations.

The SJT’s chief executive, Stephen Freeman, said: “The project will enhance our customer experience enormously. The theatre has been here for 21 years and we’re aware it needs some refurbishment. We want to provide a twenty-first century theatre-going experience.” He added that the intention was to “complement the unique period features while looking to the future.”

The theatre will close on 7 January, following an afternoon concert by the Hammonds Saltaire Band, and will re-open on 12 March in time for the exciting Spring season.
