Royal Enfield has discontinued the Continental GT in India. A Royal Enfield dealer in Bangalore has revealed this information to DriveSpark and is longer accepting bookings for the cafe racer.
The Royal Enfield dealer also said that the Continental GT would be replaced by the new 650cc twin-cylinder Continental GT which is expected to be launched in India by March or April 2018.
The Royal Enfield Continental GT was launched in the Indian market in 2013, and the retro cafe racer failed to deliver expected sales numbers for the company. Now, due to the poor demand, Royal Enfield has finally pulled the plugs of the Continental GT in the country.
Despite the poor demand in India, the Continental GT has been a successful product in several global markets. Now, with the discontinuation of the cafe racer, Royal Enfield can focus on the upcoming 650cc twins which also include the new Interceptor 650.
Coming to the Continental GT, it was a powerful cafe racer equipped with a 535cc fuel injected, single-cylinder engine producing 29bhp and 44Nm of torque. The motorcycle also features premium cycle parts such as Paioli suspension and Bybre disc brake at the front.
The currently sold Continental GT will be replaced by the new 650cc model which was unveiled at the 2017 EICMA motorcycle show in Italy. The overall design of the retro-styled cafe racer remains the same but gets an all-new twin-cylinder 650cc engine.
The new Royal Enfield GT 650 draws power from a 648cc parallel-twin engine producing 46.3bhp and 52Nm of peak torque. The engine comes mated to a 6-speed gearbox. The new engine is said to refined and reliable as compared to the previous model.
Along with the new Continental GT 650, Royal Enfield will also introduce the all-new retro-styled Interceptor 650, featuring the same 650cc engine. Its an all-new model developed by Royal Enfield. The overall design of the motorcycle is elegant and classic, and the company is betting high on this model.
