THE DESTRUCTION from Storm Eleanor will cause travel chaos as mild temperatures begin to plummet on Thursday, forecasters revealed.

An area of low pressure makes its way towards the UK on Friday

Sunny spells will emerge across the country as the morning fog clears - showers will make their way across northern parts that could turn into hill snow.

Met Office Meteorologist Aidan McGivern said: “There will be frost and fog patches to wake us up on Thursday morning.

“Once any fog clears though, plenty of sunny spells, just one or two showers in the far north of the mainland.

“Elsewhere, after a wet start the rain moves into the far north of England, southern and central Scotland as well as Northern Ireland, it tends to linger there and as it pushes into cold air further north we will see some hill snow.

“But it does brighten up further south, although it will be another blustery day here, the wind gusts not quite as strong as we saw during Storm Eleanor’s spell but still it’s going to be quite boisterous out there.

“Temperatures sitting at 12 or 13 degrees Celsius, it is going to be mild.

“In the far north there will be at much colder air, and as that colder air bumps into the rainfall we will see some hill snow.”

An area of low pressure makes its way towards the UK on Friday that will drag mild temperatures into single figures.

Mr McGivern added: “The rain and hill snow will peter out through Thursday night into Friday but then the next area of low pressure moves in for the start of Friday and that’s going to give back further spells of blustery, wet and windy weather.

“England and Wales starting off with fairly heavy showers on Friday and actually it does brighten up through the day and although there will continue to be some showers in many places, there will also be some sunshine.

“Many places will feel colder by Friday with the chilliest air once again in the far north, northerly winds there will become stronger through the day and it’s that northerly wind that will make a return by the weekend.”
