WEDNESDAY'S COLLEGES: Leathernecks drop Summit League opener at South Dakota

VERMILLION, S.D. — Matt Mooney scored 11 of his 14 points in the final 4:16 to help South Dakota pull away and beat Western Illinois 62-50 on Wednesday night for its third straight win.

The Coyotes (14-4, 2-0 Summit League) have won seven of their last eight games since a 16-point loss to then-No. 1 Duke on Dec. 2. They have defeated Western Illinois (8-5, 0-1) in four straight and eight of the last nine games dating to the 2013-14 season.

Kobe Webster made three free throws to pull the Leathernecks to 46-42 with 4:35 left before the Coyotes closed on a 16-8 surge. Mooney made two field goals and was 6-of-6 shooting from the line during the stretch.

Trey Burch-Manning had 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Nick Fuller chipped in 10 points for South Dakota.

Webster scored 19 points and Dalan Ancrum added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Western Illinois.

Drake 87, Illinois State 62

DES MOINES — Reed Timmer hit six 3-pointers and finished with 28 points and Nick McGlynn had his fourth double-double of the season to help Drake beat Illinois State for the Bulldogs' fourth win in a row.

McGlynn finished with 11 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and two blocks. De'Antae McMurray had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Jalen Gibbs also scored 12 for Drake (9-7, 3-0 Missouri Valley).

McGlynn's dunk about seven minutes in made it 10-9 and the Bulldogs led the rest of the way. Drake scored 11 of the final 14 points, including seven by Timmer, to take a 40-26 lead into the break and Illinois State trailed by double figures throughout the second half.

Keyshawn Evans scored 13 points and Milik Yarbrough added 11 points, five rebounds, seven assists and two blocks for Illinois State (8-7, 2-1). The Redbirds tied their lowest scoring output of the season and had their four-game win streak snapped.

Drake hit 15 of 30 from 3-point range.

Webster 78, IWU 68

ST. LOUIS — Iowa Wesleyan's Brock Butler was high scorer with 22 points, but Webster defeated the Tigers in a SLIAC game.

Austin Rebel scored 15 points for Iowa Wesleyan and Jake Neubauer and Elijah Johnson each added 10 points.

Nigel Wilcox scored 18 points to lead four Webster players in double figures.

Webster evened its record at 6-6. Iowa Wesleyan (1-11) hosts Westminster in Mount Pleasant Saturday.

WOMEN

Webster 83, IWU 45

ST. LOUIS — Five Gorloks reached double figures and Webster University rolled by Iowa Wesleyan in a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women's basketball game at Grant Gymnasium in St. Louis Wednesday night.

The Gorloks led 48-9 at halftime.

Webster's Darieana Hunter led all scorers with 16 points and Taylor Lucas scored 12. Natalie Busscher scored 11 points and Aley Lucas and Megan Brandt each added 10. Darby Massner paced Iowa Wesleyan with 14 points and Josie Zurrusen had 10. The Tigers' Ahlia Tai scored eight points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.

Webster improved to 8-4. Iowa Wesleyan is 1-11 and hosts Westminster at Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
