(MENAFN - Gulf Times) A team of three students from three universities in Doha bagged an 'Excellence Prize at Huawei's International ICT Skill Competition finals in Shenzhen, China this week.
Students Dabeeruddin Syed, Naheel Faisal Kamal Kamal, and Fatima Ezzahra Hariminals were selected following six months of qualifying rounds that saw the participation of 13 teams across 10 countries in the Middle East.
The final leg of the journey brought 13 team finalists to China, who included 15 female students from the region, competing in the day-long finals.
In addition to a $30,000 cash prize for the most outstanding team, Huawei also awarded certificates, trophies and prizes to two runner-up teams and three third place teams.
The next seven teams received 'Excellence Prizes, while six tutors and five academic institutions received the 'Excellent Tutor and 'Best Academy prizes.
The all-expenses paid trip gave the finalists invaluable exposure to a leading global company's expertise and 'a priceless cultural experience.
'The platform has demonstrated beyond a doubt that the young talent in the region has the potential to mature into world-class experts, said Huawei Middle East president Charles Yang.
The event also featured a technology workshop by global ICT (information and communication technology) experts, which included a panel discussion by delegates from eight Middle East countries, who were invited to attend the ICT Talent Cultivation Summit.
The award ceremony was attended by senior Huawei executives, including Huawei Middle East's Yang, Huawei Technologies' corporate senior vice-president of Huawei Technologies Chen Lifang, and Huawei global government affairs department vice-president Simon Lacey.
Other senior representatives were also present from participating countries' embassies and consulates.
The national-level initiative in Qatar, supported by the Chinese embassy, saw students from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar University, Community College of Qatar, and Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar participating.
The participants took 'highly selective examinations, worked in laboratories and tackled some of the industry's most complex challenges on cloud computing, switching, routing and other key ICT solutions and technologies related to digital transformation.
In partnership with 14 government ministries, the Huawei Middle East ICT Skill Competition 2017 was successful in its mission to unearth and cultivate the region's finest ICT talent, bringing together more than 10,285 students from 121 educational institutions.
