Govt appoints State-level committee to strengthen doctors from AYUSH

Pune: The State government has decided to form a State-level committee to ensure improvement in quality doctors from the Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) field working in the State government. This committee compromising 20 members from the State will suggest improvement in training for doctors and streamline the process of appointing these doctors on higher posts.

At present, there are 2,000 medical officers with the State health department, 650 doctors under National Health Mission and 1,750 doctors work with National Child Health Mission who are from AYUSH. Many interns are also employed in the public health system from AYUSH who help the entire system to work smoothly. However, these doctors are at the moment serving as permanent or as on ad hoc posts and do not get promotions on higher posts.

According to the State General Resolution (GR) dated January 3, 2018,  this State-level committee will suggest improvement for these doctors. Currently, under the Maharashtra State Health Services, grade- A, there are 33 per cent seats for Ayurvedic doctors.  

The GR further states that the number of these doctors is high and their services should be further streamlined to make the best use of their abilities.
