People in the 36 new wards of the North and South City Corporations will also cast their votes to elect councillors the same day.

The Election Commission has also announced dates for by-polls in two parliamentary seats.

EC acting Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed told the media on Thursday that Mar 13 has been fixed for voting in Brahmanbaria-1 and Gaibandha-1 parliamentary seats.

He said the decision came from a meeting of the commissioners in the afternoon.

The schedule for the Dhaka City Corporation will be announced on Jan 9 and the two parliamentary by-polls on Feb 5.

The Dhaka North mayoral seat fell vacant following the death of Annisul Huq in November last year.

The last polls for the two Dhaka city corporations were held in 2015. Huq won the Dhaka North mayor’s seat with blessings from the Awami League.

With two years into his term, Huq was hospitalised for cerebral vasculitis in July during a trip to London. He died on Nov 30. On Dec 1, the Local Government Division declared the mayoral post vacant, giving the EC 90 days to Feb 28 to hold by-polls.

The Brahmanbaria-1 parliamentary seat fell vacant after the death of Muhammad Sayedul Hoque, who was a cabinet member.

The 75-year-old, who was elected five times from the constituency, passed away on Dec 16 while being under treatment at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital.

On Dec 19, Gaibandha-1 MP Golam Mostafa died of injuries suffered in a road accident the previous month.

The 66-year-old was a first-time MP, who was elected in the by-polls last year after the previous lawmaker Manjurul Islam Liton was shot dead inside his home in December 2016.
