President Trump said Thursday he has high hopes Congress can write and pass a bill to protect recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, but said he need help from Democratic lawmakers.

"Hopefully everything is going to work out very well. I really want it to work out. I can tell you the Republicans wanna see it work out very well. If we have support from the Democrats, I think DACA's going to be terrific," Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.

"We really are at a point where I think we can do something spectacular for the people on the border, the people coming through," he added.

Trump met with Senate Republicans to discuss border wall funding and a solution to the Obama-era executive order.

Lawmakers have been trying to reach an agreement on DACA, but have been unsuccessful so far. Republicans have said they don't want immigration issues brought up in the context of a must-pass spending bill later this month, while Democrats are interested in getting a DACA fix onto that bill.
