PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth has urged the government to maintain the toll rates nationwide at least until the end of the year, in line with efforts to ease the burden faced by the rakyat.
It said the commitment not to increase the toll rates this year, should be included in Barisan Nasional's (BN) general election manifesto, as proof of the government's readiness and concern in helping to reduce the rakyat's cost of living.
"Umno Youth would like to stress that the Works Ministry should ensure there are no toll hikes nationwide for this year, as committed by the ministry and the government last year.
"This is because any such hike would be seen as being in contradiction with the government's effort of easing the rakyat's burden and reducing the cost of living," it said in a statement today.
Umno Youth, however, commended the government for abolishing toll collections at the Eastern Dispersal Link (Johor), Bukit Kayu Hitam (Kedah), and Sungai Rasau and Batu Tiga (Selangor) toll plazas.
During the tabling of Budget 2018, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak announced that the toll collections for the four plazas would cease in 2018.
