Fort Smith police are investigating a convenience store shooting involving multiple officers.
The shooting, which took place Tuesday evening at Pic-N-Tote, 1116 Grand Ave., involved multiple officers firing at a driver who reportedly crashed his vehicle into patrol units and civilians' cars and tried to run over a Fort Smith police officer. The driver drove at police and civilian vehicles and an officer after Fort Smith police tried to arrest him, Fort Smith police Cpl. Anthony Rice said.
The driver, identified as Matthew Pittman, 19, of Fort Smith, is a "known felon" with a warrant out of Fort Smith, Rice said. Pittman sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to an area hospital immediately following the incident, Rice said.
Pittman was in stable condition and in custody following the shooting, Rice said.
Rice said probation and parole officials notified the Police Department about Pittman Wednesday.
"It was set up to have him arrested right here at the convenience store," Rice said. "They knew he was coming here."
Rice said several officers "fired at Mr. Pittman and hit him several times" after he drove at the cars and the officer because of "the danger of what was involved."
Fort Smith police marked off the convenience store parking lot with crime scene tape following the shooting Wednesday. Pittman's car sat next to pump number 4 in the parking lot after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Rice said.
Rice said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending investigation, he said.
Rice said he will release more information about the shooting as the investigation progresses.
