West Burlington Fire Chief Shaun Ryan said the fire department ended 2017 with just under 600 service calls. While he has not run official numbers yet, Ryan said medical calls have dropped from about 67 to 68 percent of the total number of calls to 64 to 66 percent in that time.

Since the new year started, the department has received nine calls, six of which were fire related. Ryan said most of those were furnace-related fires due to the cold weather.
