Alleged gang member indicted in 2016 murder

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A statewide grand jury has indicted an alleged Pawtucket gang member in the September 2016 murder of 23-year-old Dylan Contreras in Pawtucket.

The grand jury indicted Alexander "Bird" DeJesus, 24, Dec. 12 in the Sept. 24, 2016, shooting death of Contreras.

The indictment was unsealed Wednesday before Judge Robert D. Krause in Providence County Superior Court.

He pleaded not guilty through his lawyer, John M. Cicilline, to one count each of murder, discharging a firearm while committing a crime that ended in death, and carrying an unlicensed firearm.

Krause ordered DeJesus, a purported Bucket East street gang member, held without bail.

DeJesus, of 68 Cote Ave., Chicopee, Massachusetts, was arrested Dec. 21 by the Chicopee Police Department and extradited to Rhode Island.

Contreras was found dying in his BMW outside 66 Underwood St. Sept. 24, 2016.  Two days later, the police reported his death was a homicide. The state medical examiner’s office determined Contreras had been shot in the head.

He left behind a young daughter and a pregnant girlfriend.

A grand jury in May indicted DeJesus and five other alleged Bucket East members on six felony charges related to the Jan. 9, 2017, drive-by shooting aimed at Bucket West rivals near the Licht Judicial Complex.

He and the others were accused of assault with a dangerous weapon; discharging a firearm while committing a crime of violence that ended in injury; conspiracy; drive-by shooting; and two firearms offenses for the noontime shooting of Mathew DePina, 22.

Court records indicate that DeJesus pleaded guilty on Nov. 8 to conspiracy in that case. In exchange for his plea, five other charges were dismissed. He was due to be sentenced Jan. 10 in that case.

The Pawtucket Police conducted the investigation.
