Temperatures Thursday night are forecast in the low-to-mid 20s with current projections from 25 to 28 degrees overnight Friday into Saturday morning.

For an area that stretches from Dauphin Island in Alabama to Destin, a Hard Freeze Warning could remain in effect until Saturday morning.

According to an announcement from the National Weather Service early Thursday morning, the weather advisory that's in effect tonight may continue for at least one more frigid evening.

A break in the extremely cold weather comes this weekend as the high temperature both Saturday and Sunday is forecast to reach into the 50s. The low Saturday night is 35 degrees and a balmy 51 Sunday night.

The weather service is warning residents that a prolonged period of sub-freezing temperatures could result in hypothermia and will also be a danger for pets, livestock and sensitive vegetation. Exposed water pipes will be at risk of freezing and possibly bursting.

Check on elderly neighbors to make sure they have adequate heat. Area shelters should continue to expect increased demand. Outdoor pets and livestock should also have adequate warmth.

Take adequate safety precautions with heating systems, and make sure to utilize carbon monoxide detectors in enclosed spaces.

Ensure space heaters are not left unattended and are not used near flammable materials such as curtains or bed coverings. Space heaters account for one out of every three home heating fires and four out of five home heating fire deaths.
