OncLive® mourns the loss of Jimmie Holland, M.D., who passed away at age 89 on Dec. 24, 2017. Dr. Holland was a 2014 Giants of Cancer Care® Inductee, a member of the 2016 and 2017 Giants selection committee and was the founder of psycho-oncology. She will be remembered for her groundbreaking work to combat the traumatizing psychological impact of cancer diagnosis on patients.

In 1977, Dr. Holland created a full-time Psychiatry Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering where she served as a Chief until 1996. Following her role as Chief, she served as a chairperson for the Department of Psychiatry until 2003. During her 40-year career, Dr. Holland offered revolutionary contributions to the field of psycho-oncology. She played an instrumental role in gaining insight on the mental impact of a cancer diagnosis on patients. Her studies and research showcased the importance of therapy and interventions to relieve anxiety and depression associated with cancer.
