Ben McAdoo once said if the Packers "put a lifetime contract in front of me, I'd probably sign it."
The former Giants coach's potential path back to Green Bay has emerged.
The Packers fired offensive coordinator Edgar Bennett on Wednesday night and decided against renewing quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt's contract, leaving two key offensive coaching positions on Mike McCarthy's staff open. Either of those spots could present the ideal fit for McAdoo after he was fired by the Giants 12 games into his second season as head coach.
McCarthy is McAdoo's main coaching mentor. McAdoo famously drove through a snowstorm to meet McCarthy face-to-face at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, and later worked under him with the Saints and 49ers. When McCarthy became Packers head coach in 2006, McAdoo became his tight ends coach.
The latest on Giants' coaching search
McAdoo coached tight ends for six years in Green Bay, then took over as the team's quarterbacks coach in 2012. He left after two seasons to become the Giants' offensive coordinator, then was named head coach in 2016.
McAdoo would seem to have Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers' support for either position.
"The thing about Ben, though, how he earns your respect, is that he is a grinder," Rodgers said on a conference call last season. "He cares about it, and when you see somebody who cares about it as much as Ben does, you can't help but have respect for the guy.
