Former bauxite mines turn death trap during monsoon season

KUANTAN: Residents living near former bauxite mines in the district have been urged to be careful as these sites could pose as death traps during the monsoon season.

Paya Besar MP Datuk Seri Abdul Manan Ismail who voiced his concern on the matter said these former bauxite mines looked any other areas when covered with water.

"But they are deep and may prove fatal if children were to fall into them," he told reporters when met at a flood relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pandan here today.

In this regard, Abdul Manan called on parents to look after their children and not to allow them to go near such dangerous spots.

He added the Regent of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah had called for all bauxite mines to be refilled after three children were drowned on Feb 4 last year in a bauxite mine in Taman Sungai Karang Jaya, here.

"However, I understand many bauxite mines were abandoned despite the call by the Regent," he said. — Bernama
