Hutch Middle Schools to continue to have separate principals

Two Hutchinson USD 308 school principals with short stints here have resigned their jobs, effective at the end of the year.

Hutchinson Middle School-7 Principal Jeff Shearon came here two years ago after having been superintendent of Burrton USD 369.

He does not have a new job lined up but intends to remain in the education field. Shearon said he’s keeping his options open and it’s still very early for school districts to fill jobs for 2017-18, he said.

When Hutchinson hired Shearon for 2016-17, the initial strategy was to have him follow David T. Patterson as principal of both HMS-8 and HMS-7, schools less than 2 miles apart.

The school board changed its plan before the school year began in 2016 and hired Bruce Hurford to be principal of HMS-8 and Shearon to lead HMS-7.

“There is every intent to keep a principal in both middle schools,” USD 308 Superintendent Gary Price wrote in an email Wednesday. He said the job opening has been posted.

Faris Elementary School Principal Daniel Ackland is in his third year in that job. He and his wife, Michelle Ackland, an HMS-8 teacher, will be moving after the end of this school year.

Daniel Ackland said he has been hired to be a principal next fall at a school outside Reno County. He declined to say where he will be going until after he has shared that news with Faris staff in mid-January.

The Faris job also has been posted. Price said applications for the principal openings began coming in Wednesday.
