The Town of Lakeshore has closed part of the Belle River, put up barriers and issued a thin-ice warning.

No skating, snowmobiles or ATVs are allowed.

The river is closed near the opening to Lake St. Clair because of construction of the jetty. The town said the area is dangerous because the water freezes shortly after the contractor finishes work for the day. The ice might look safe enough to venture out on, but it is too thin.

There are signs and a barrier across the river to prevent access. The town said the section of river by the pedestrian bridge is also unsafe because of the pumping station. Residents are asked to avoid the area.

The town is repairing, replacing and extending the breakwall that separates Lakeview Park West Beach from the Belle River.  The jetty will be 150 metres long.

The first 25 metres of the existing breakwall will be replaced and extended 125 metres into the lake to provide a walkable barrier for swimmers.
